Behavior Solutions by Behavior Specialists

We know you've already tried things. Here's what's different.

Most of our clients had already worked with a trainer or three. They’d done the research, followed the plan, tried everything they could find. They were still struggling. And it wasn’t because they didn’t try hard enough.

Aggression, reactivity, compulsions, separation anxiety. These aren’t training problems. They’re behavior problems. And behavior problems need specialized solutions.

We’re a team of certified behavior specialists working from a science-based, force-free, enrichment framework. We love the complex cases: multiple behavioral issues, medication plans, medical complications, households where the human needs and the dog’s needs feel impossible to reconcile. That’s not the exception here. It’s the norm.

What this looks like in real life

FEAR-RELATED AGGRESSION + ANXIETY + PREP FOR BABY

Jackson, from Barrington, Illinois, USA

The situation: Jackson had a history with visitors, including a bite, and his family had worked around it for years. But with a baby on the way, workarounds were no longer enough.

What we did: We worked with Jackson online and in close collaboration with a Veterinary Behaviorist on an anti-anxiety medication plan. Sessions focused on reading escalation cues, flight training, and serious preparation: a baby-homecoming plan, management strategies, and a roadmap for adapting as the baby grows.

Where they are now: Jackson took to the new baby better than anyone hoped. Curious but not fixated, and fully part of family life (walks included!)

SEPARATION ANXIETY + DOG-DOG RESOURCE GUARDING

Bubi, from Berlin, Germany

The situation: Bubi had separation anxiety from day one. Her family had tried 3 professionals, plus books and YouTube. They’d made some progress, but after all that, she could still only be left alone for 10 minutes. A move to a new house felt like the right time to try something different.

What we did: We built on what had already worked, plus layering in self-regulation skills, a structured relaxation protocol, and calming strategies tailored to a multi-dog home with resource guarding. All sessions were online.

Where they are now: For the first time in 10 years, Bubi’s parents had a spontaneous date night. No planning. No panic.

LEASH REACTIVITY + HANDLING SENSITIVITY + PHYSICAL THERAPY SUPPORT

Lanie, from Naperville, Illinois, USA

The situation: Lanie’s dog-dog reactivity got to the point where her family had to choose between her and family holidays. Enough was enough. Years later, after real progress, they came back to us for training to support her canine rehabilitation.

What we did: We worked with Lanie online and in-home,  focusing on helping her feel comfortable around other dogs, tackling harness comfort, and building a training foundation for her long-term mobility and rehabilitation work.

Where they are now: Lanie made a real dog friend (close enough that the two families now dog-sit for each other!) Walks went from something her family dreaded to something they now look forward to.

How it works

1. Book your initial consultation

After booking, you’ll complete an intake questionnaire covering your dog’s history, problem behaviors, and goals. We come to your first session already familiar with your situation.

2. We create a custom plan

Your initial consultation is a real conversation. We ask questions, listen, and give you our honest assessment. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your dog and a concrete next step.

3. We work through it together

Even the best plans need adjusting. We’ll troubleshoot and tweak as you go, making sure your plan stays effective and realistic for your life.

"When I added a new dog to my home, just a few weeks later I was struggling with inter dog aggression. I worked with Ellen on a variety of problem behaviors including dog/dog aggression, resource guarding, handling sensitivities, and greeting novel people. Ellen adjusted our behavior plan according to my bandwidth, worked seamlessly alongside my veterinary behaviorist, and supported us through medication & life changes."

Frequently Asked Questions

Why this is different

Training builds skills. Behavior consulting addresses the root cause of the behavior. Most clients come to us having already worked with a trainer. That’s not a failure. It means the problem runs deeper than training is designed to reach.

Honestly, it will depend on your dog, their history, their behavior, and the environment. We won’t promise a specific outcome. What we will promise is a rigorous plan, full transparency about what’s realistic, and a consultant who stays with you throughout.

We’ve seen meaningful change in dogs with long behavioral histories. Behavior is complex and there are many factors involved. Length of time performing the behavior is just one of those. The fact that you’re still looking, after everything, says a lot about what’s possible.

What we work with

We work with it all- from nuisance and annoying behaviors to worrisome, scary, or dangerous behaviors. Many of our cases require additional support from parallel professionals, like a Veterinary Behaviorist, Neurologist, or Internist.

Plus, our team is a real team: we work together and collaborate on cases to make sure our clients get the best support we can offer. That means you get our team’s collective knowledge without the hassle (and cost) of being referred out to another consultant.

Yes! The majority of our clients come to us with pets who already have a bite history. For extreme cases (I.E. many stitches, mauling, death) we will recommend you work with a Veterinary Behaviorist alongside our team.

Because of the complexity level of cases we specialize in, we regularly work with dogs who are on anti-anxiety medication. We’ve walked clients through every stage of the medication journey: from deciding to talk to their vet to beginning trials to maintenance to sometimes weaning off of.

Yes! We have the same success rate with our remote sessions as we do with our in-person sessions. As we say, it doesn’t matter if we can get your pet to do something; it only matters if you can.

We understand that many people are skeptical about how remote sessions can help them. We’ve addressed the most common concerns in this blog post about remote pet consulting. And more information specifically about why we don’t need to see the behavior to help can be found in this pet training blog post.

The process

A behavior modification journey is about so much more than just training your pet. It requires dedication in the form of time and work from the household members as well, and the humans are as much a part of the process as the pets are. There’s a reason we call it a journey!

More specifically, your pet behavior training will include history taking, considerable discussion with your consultant to create a plan that is sustainable for you, management, education, and skill-building for you and your pet.

We will use scaffolding– splitting more challenging techniques into smaller steps and building upon already-learned skills– in order to help everyone learn successfully. That means we will not make you jump into the deep end until you’re ready.

That depends on a lot of factors: the complexity of your pet’s case, your training skillset, how much time you’re able to devote to training throughout the week, how much back and forth is needed between parallel professions like your vet, and more. We typically can’t provide an answer until we’ve started working with you and gotten to know you and your pet.

We adhere to Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) principles. We also fall under the “positive reinforcement-based” and “force-free” training categories and believe in using the same methods for humans as well as animals.

Yes! We routinely collaborate with vets, Veterinary Behaviorists, and other medical specialists to ensure our clients have a whole-care team approach. We’ve also worked with clients’ pet sitters and groomers.

Logistics & Pricing

For most of our clients- yes. Behavior consulting is different than dog training. We’re teaching you how to manage your dog in their normal environment and navigate day-to-day situations. It doesn’t matter if we can get your dog to do something; it only matters that you can make it happen in the moment. Plus, because of our level of experience, we do not need to see your pet’s behavior to get a clear idea of the problem.

When we do have a client who we think would benefit from switching to in-person sessions, we work with them to find the best solution, whether that’s with our team or by collaborating with another professional.

No. Our services are charged by the hour, not who we’re working with. We’re happy to work with multiple pets (and people!) in one session, and often need to in order to see success. Plus, many times we’re working with behavior problems that impact more than one of your fur kids and will need to work with everyone to see results.

Here’s an example from Jennifer:We have two Boston terriers who started displaying aggression towards each other after 3 years of being raised together. We were at a loss of what to do and were referred to Pet Harmony for help.

First, my initial contact with Pet Harmony was very warm and reassuring. They have experience and understanding in knowing how stressful these situations can be and they responded promptly and with resources to help us manage the situation while we waited to schedule our first consult.

The ease of registering online and being able to have access to resources on their website was incredibly helpful. The resources helped us understand what was occurring and that we are not alone in these situations.

Second, our trainer, MaryKaye, is the most generous, compassionate and validating trainer I have ever encountered. She walked into a situation where not only were the fur babies at odds but I was a ball of anxiety. Right off the bat she reassured me that this is something we can manage and with the right training can better control the situation. MaryKaye empowered me to take control of the situation better, relax enough so I was not projecting and allowed the dogs to interact with each other in way that lessened the likelihood of them having conflict.

I had a total of 4 sessions, used lots of cheese, and am elated to say that the training and enrichment therapy done has created a home in which the dogs are able to co exist, free range without any more incidents. While I know this is not common and MaryKay always gave me the good and the bad in what outcome could occur, I am confident that without her support and skills we would not be where we are today! I highly recommend Pet harmony/MaryKaye as a resource not only for the pets but for the humans as well who need the support to navigate situations like my own.”

No. We work with you and your dog in your actual environment, which is where the behavior actually lives. We do not have a facility.

"Pet Harmony was instrumental in helping me navigate the world of dog behavior when I first brought my sensitive girl home. [VB diagnosed with anxiety, global fear, including to sounds, and fear-related aggression toward strangers.] Like most, I thought I 'knew' dogs. How very wrong I was. Pet Harmony was pivotal in helping me accept my girl as she is and build a relationship with her. It's also worth noting that they are incredibly understanding and supportive of the human end of the leash."
