It’s hard to take on aggression cases.
Oftentimes, you’re dealing with families that are emotionally and even physically hurting.
Sometimes the cases end in re-homing or behavioral euthanasia.
Other times, you have to deal with the added pressure of working with paraprofessionals, animal control, or even navigating tricky legal matters.
In a career where high levels of stress and pressure are the norm, taking care of yourself matters more than ever.
We’ll help you create for yourself a gift that keeps on a giving:
Your crisis kit is a lifeline that can help you through the darkest of days.
Working with aggression cases and serious maladaptive behaviors often leads to…
Shorter career lifespans. Due to the trauma that comes with dealing with THE most difficult cases, day in and day out.
Compromised effectiveness. When you’re stressed or burnt out, it’s hard to give each of your clients your very best. Things will slip through the cracks and you may not lead with as much empathy as you’d like.
Physical and mental health issues. Chronic stress can take a massive toll on your general well-being over time. It impacts all areas of your life.
Falling out of love with your work. When you have no stress managment or self care plan in place, your work will lose its luster. You’ll question if you’re making a difference at all. You’ll eventually fall out of love with work that is difficult, but still necessary and good.
And I know exactly what it’s like to love the pets you work with but suffer in the process of helping them
I’ve burnt out multiple times while working in our industry. The stress of my job has exacerbated my chronic illness. I have a laundry list of the good, the bad, and the ugly experiences I’ve worked through in this field during the course of my career and the therapy sessions to prove it.
I now love my job. I love what I do. I love getting to help pets and their people live harmoniously. I can safely say I’m going to be in this industry for a very long time and I’m not so scared of burning out anymore.
What’s my secret? Self-care. And I’m not talking about bubble baths and other things you find in self-care articles on the internet (though I do love a bubble bath).
I’m talking about meeting MY needs as well as I meet the needs of my clients and their pets. Thanks to therapy I have a lot of tools in that toolbox, but the one I use practically every day is my crisis kit. It’s my quick, go-to, always-available stress reliever and something that I honestly think everyone in our industry should have.
There are many ways to manage your stress and seek self care to make your difficult job sustainable, and maybe even rewarding. One long term solution could be therapy. I’m a BIG proponent of therapy and still see my own therapist regularly to process the range of emotions that comes with working challenging cases.
But therapy isn’t a viable or accessible option for everybody, and that’s why we are advocates of taking matters into our own hands—which is where a custom crisis comes in!
When you create a crisis kit, you give yourself multiple options and ways to regulate your emotions or complete your stress cycle so none of that baggage (or as little as possible) stays in your system. You can build it in a way that addresses your unique needs and preferences. And you can have it on hand ANY time you need an outlet (i.e. in your car, between sessions).
If you hesitate to invest in yourself or have very little time to dedicate to self care, this is an easy and practical way to start giving yourself the care your body, mind, and heart are screaming for.
In conclusion: You need a crisis kit. I’d say you even deserve one.
